Well, it's May!  Let's watch the flowers grow! Here are a few details as to what will be happening in the classroom.

In Math class, students will be working on Unit 12 dealing with  rates and ratios.

In Reading class,  the students are reading Bud Not Buddy. They will discuss and do activities related to reading strategies such as--understanding vocabulary, making connections, asking questions, making predictions, visualing and summarizing.  Fluency with accuracy  will also be a focus. Thank you, parents, for helping your child read at home nightly.  Reading orally and discussing afterward helps fluency and comprehension strategies.  

Writing class will have students writing a color poem, learning about quotation marks and figures of speech. They will be discussing the six traits of writing and looking at pieces of writing to learn about grammar and the parts of speech. 

Our spelling focus will change from week to week.  The students will be looking at word patterns along with some of the 90 basic spelling words which are commonly misspelled words. They are listed on my web page under homework.  They will be chanting the words, discussing what "looks right," working on rhyming to figure out how a word is spelled and playing games like "guess the covered word."

In Social Studies class, students will be learning about westward expansion and the Civil War.  

 Earth systems will be the focus of our science series. The students will be looking at landforms, volcanos, and earthquakes, etc.
