Core Syllabi: Following are the specific items taught in the second grade curricular areas.

 2nd Grade Math
 
  • In addition to whole group instruction, concepts are taught through use of various manipulatives, small group activities, and explorations.
 
Addition
o       Use one and two digit addition strategies
o       Identify missing addends
o       Solve number stories
o       Know basic facts and fact families
·        math fact practice – program ranges from addition to division
 
Subtraction
o       Use one and two digit subtraction strategies
o       Solve number stories
o       Know basic facts and fact families
 
Geometry
  • Identify 2D and 3D shapes
  • Identify symmetrical figures
  • Find common attributes of shapes
  • Identify parallel and nonparallel line segments
  • Draw line segments
 
Time
o       Tell time to 5 minute intervals
o       Compute elapsed time
o       Demonstrate calendar concepts and skills
 
Money
o       Calculate the values of coin and bill combinations
o       Make change
o       Show equivalent amounts of coins
o       Estimate approximate costs and sums
o       Solve money stories
o       Read and write money in decimal notation
o       Exchange pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters
 
Graphing
o       Plot data on a bar graph
o       Compare quantities from a bar graph
 
Number sense
o       Identify place value for numbers up to five digits
o       Find equivalent names for numbers
o       Compare numbers using <, >, and =
o       Make tallies and give the total
o       Identify number patterns
o       Count by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s
 
Fractions
o       Identify simple fractions of a whole or a set
o       Compare simple fractions
 
Multiplication/Division
o       Multiply numbers with 0, 1, 2, 5, or 10 as a factor
o       Construct multiplication/division fact families
o       Solve simple multiplication/division number stories
 
Measurement
o       Read degrees F on a thermometer
o       Measure to the nearest inch, ½ inch
o       Measure to the nearest centimeter, ½ centimeter
o       Use appropriate units for measurement
o       Find area and perimeter

2nd Grade Science
Animal Life Cycles
o       Identify that living things produce offspring that resemble their parents but have individual differences.
o       Distinguish that life cycle changes are different for different animals.
o       Explain how some animals change form as they grow from baby to adult, and how changing structures help them function in different environments.
 
Environments
o       Demonstrate understanding that an environment is made up of plants and animals, and nonliving things such as soil, water, rocks, and air.
o       Describe how living things meet their needs in two habitats: a stream habitat and a woodland habitat.
o       Discuss how natural and human-made changes can affect the living things in an environment.
 
Energy Needs
o       Describe how living things get energy from food.
o       Show how energy passes from one living thing to another in food chains and webs.
o       Recognize that eating healthful foods from each food group gives humans energy and helps them stay healthy.
 
Rocks, Soils, and Fossils
o       Identify that rocks and soils have different properties that make them useful in different ways.
o       Describe how weathering and erosion change Earth’s surface.
o       Interpret how fossils provide clues about plants and animals that lived in the past.
 
Using and Saving Resources
o       Identify natural resources people use (such as air, water, soil, rocks, and plants).
o       Recognize how people can change the environment in harmful and helpful ways.
o       Share ways in which people can conserve natural resources by reducing their use of natural resources and recycling and reusing items made from natural resources.
 
Comparing Matter
o       Explain that objects can be described by properties such as size, shape, and color.
o       Classify matter as solid, liquid, or gas.
o       Illustrate how taking away or adding heat can cause matter to change states.
 
Making Sound
o       Demonstrate that sound is made when matter vibrates, and understand that vibrations in the human ear cause us to hear that sound.
o       Discuss how sound travels differently through different states of matter.
o       Describe sounds in terms of pitch and volume.
 
Objects in motion
o       Describe how the position of an object can be described by locating it in relation to another object, and pushes and pulls are forces that change the positions of objects.
o       Discuss how distance and speed are measures of motion.
o       Explain how ramps, levers, and pulleys are simple machines that make work easier.
 
Magnets
o       Demonstrate how magnets attract and repel each other and some other objects.
o       Determine that objects that contain iron are magnetic; objects made from glass, paper, wood, or plastic are not.
o       Explain how a magnet can attract or repel only those objects that are in its magnetic field.
 
Scientific Method
o       Learn and use the steps of the scientific method: 
State the problem

Hypothesize

o       Compare the life of pioneers to life today after field trip to Pioneer Village
o       Identify the goods and services in a community

o       Locate the continents and oceans
o       Locate the U.S. and Wisconsin on a map and globe

Individual Syllabus for Mr. Casetta
 
 
o       Opportunities for individual and group work
o       Regular practice and timed tests of math facts to improve confidence and efficiency
o       Regular classroom meetings for teacher/students to build community, share ideas and concerns
o       Writer’s workshop process of plan, rough, draft, revise, edit, publish (possible ways of publishing: adding illustration, typing on the computer, reading to class, displaying in room)
o       Regular time for student self-selected reading
o       Weekly computer lab time (possible projects: software emphasizing curricular topics, Internet navigation, preparing/presenting PowerPoint slideshow presentations)
o       Walking field trips to highlight elements of the curriculum (e. g., environment/habitat, elements of a community)
o       Bussed field trips to augment curriculum (possible trips: Pioneer Village, Riveredge Nature Center)

Grading Practices

     -Students are graded individually based on their achievement in relation to state or district standards for second grade.

     -Our report card has separate grades for academic achievement and behavior/work habits.

     -Grading is used as a reference to help identify areas of student strength and assist students in areas of need.

     -Not all work is graded, but can be checked or utilized to again help identify strengths and assist students in areas of need.
