Mrs. Schmitt's Bio

I grew up in Cudahy which is a suburb on the south side of Milwaukee.  I first became interested in science when I was a sophomore in high school.  I entered and won an essay contest (OK, I was the only one who entered) to attend an environmental camp called Trees for Tomorrow in Eagle River.  I learned so much and really gained an appreciation of the outdoors.

I have many interests that are related to science.  I traveled to Costa Rica to study endangered leatherback turtles.  I like to travel to places where I can enjoy the outdoors - recently I have been to Alaska, Colorado, Northern California, and Oregon.  Over the past 5 years I have been working on a major project at my home in Farmington.   We have taken about three acres of farmland and established a tall-grass prairie.  It is exciting to see what new prairie flowers will bloom every year and watch the wildlife that comes to feed there.

I love to read about human genetics and infectious diseases.  I read a lot of fiction too - my interests vary, but I am always looking forward to the newest John Grisham book.  I am also an avid Brewers fan.  I love going to games and in the future would like to travel to other cities to see them play.
