Dear 8th Grade Parents,

The Human Growth and Development Committee has made some recommendations for the 8th Grade Health Curriculum at Kewaskum Middle School. Recommended changes include adding a unit on sexual behavior to the health curriculum. As part of this unit, students will be introduced to the following topics over the course of three lessons:

1.   Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), including symptoms, prevention, and long-term health risks associated with STIs.

2. An introduction and discussion of oral sex and the physical and emotional risks associated with oral sex.

3. Healthy relationships, including positive behaviors associated with dating.

The committee also understands that families have a wide range of personal beliefs associated with these topics, and the School District of Kewaskum respects those beliefs. Therefore, parents have the option of holding their son/daughter out of all or some of these lessons. Parents also have the option of looking over the instructional materials prior to these lessons being taught. Mr. Grotenhuis will be available after school until 3:30 on school days.

If you would like to opt your son/daughter out of these lessons, simply send a note to school with them. Their grades will not be affected by them opting out of the class; alternate individual lessons will be assigned.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the instructor, Mr. Jeff Grotenhuis at 262-626-8427 ext. 2036 or email jgrotenh@ksd.k12.wi.us.

Sincerely,

Jeff Grotenhuis
