8th Grade/Earth Science:

o Explain importance of rocks and minerals in everyday life
o Identify major rock types based on characteristics
o Analyze importance of mining and mineral conservation

o Form and express an opinion about controversial current science topics (Climate Change)
o Describe the relationship between human activity and its impact on air quality
o Explain the characteristics and important components of each layer of the atmosphere
· Weather
o Predict weather patterns
o Identify major components of weather systems
o Perform data collection using weather tools
· Glaciers
o Describe major changes in Wisconsin’s geology throughout its history
o Describe and identify major land features in Wisconsin
o Explain the formation and movement of glaciers
· Mapping
o Demonstrate use of map, compass, and GPS technology
Major Projects:
- Create children’s book about caves
- Crandon mining webquest
- Design a “green” arena or stadium
- Create a CD with songs related to weather
- 3-D model of glacial formations
Grading:
A = 94 – 100 B+ = 87 – 89 C+ = 77 – 79 D+ = 67 – 69
A- = 90 – 93 B = 83 – 86 C = 73 – 76 D = 63 – 66
B- = 80 – 82 C- = 70 – 72 D- = 60 – 62
Students will be given time and support in class. However, some projects, assignments, and test preparation may need to be completed at home.
