Generating Ideas
o Identify 3 creative inventions of one artist
o Combine several real things into an imaginative form
o Recognize the smallest creative improvement


Media Use and Selection
o Select a medium to accomplish a specific goal
o Demonstrate values and details in the use of pencil
o Create 16 colors by using 3


Elements and Principles of Design
o Identify 2 out of 4 ways to create 3D space on a flat page
o Identify primary, secondary and tertiary colors
o Recognize the focal point in a picture

Art From the Past
o Distinguish between art created by a culture and that created by an individual
o Create learning targets for a project based on the work of 1 artist from the past

Critique Artwork
o Recognize details, values, and background in the work of others
o Recognize details, values, and background in one’s own work

Common Assessments
• Oral and written presentations to the class
• Students create learning targets
• Written reflections of one’s own strengths and challenges
• Student work demonstrates design elements

Major Assignments
• Learn 5 facts about a Renaissance artist and share the information with the class.
• Create a work of art in the style of a Renaissance artist including perspective, modeling, observation, focal point, foreground, middle ground, and background.
• Study and share with the class basic color theory: light, primary, secondary, complementary, analogous, tint, shade and neutral.
• Create a 6-color batik and a 16-color color wheel using only the 3 primary colors.
• Design and build in clay a medieval gargoyle.
• Identify the specific criteria in a work of art that contribute to its success.
• Observe and draw an outdoor and indoor scene at home using Renaissance techniques.
• Create a sketch of a personal memory using sequence and overlapping.
• Create an imaginary sketch of Kewaskum 50 years from now.

o Select a medium appropriate to a specific style of art
o Recognize how artists use the same medium to create different meaning


Elements and Principles of Design
o Demonstrate the use of one point perspective
o Identify the 3 relationships between colors
o Recognize the components of visual messages in pop culture

Art From the Past
o Recognize 6 out of 15 different styles of art from the Renaissance to the present
o Model a personal experience after the style of a specific artist

Critique Artwork
o Recognize symbolism, mood, and message in the work of others
o Recognize symbolism, mood, and message in one’s own work

Major Assignments

• Develop a list of sketch assignments and complete 3 in any media.
• Create a work of art in response to the WASB yearly challenge. 2008-09: “Protecting our Natural Environment”.
• Express a personal experience in any medium in the style of an artist you have selected.
• Share your artwork and a brief description of your selected artist’s life with the class.
• Recognize the types of emotional manipulation used in advertising.
• Design an ad or create a video commercial with a slogan, company logo, and a specific emotional appeal.
• Understand that artists communicate a diversity of ideas in many different styles.
• Participate in constructing the criteria for 3 assignments.
• Design an original cartoon character with a storyboard. Draw and animate it using Power Point.

Elements and Principles of Design
o Recognize positive and negative shapes in a composition
o Identify the moods that colors convey
o Identify how atmospheric perspective creates deep space

Art From the Past
o Emulate an artist whose style, subject matter and medium you admire
o Analyze an unfamiliar work of art for it’s message

Critique Artwork
o Write descriptive peer assessments based on specific rubrics
o Write descriptive self assessments based on specific rubrics


Common Assessments
• Oral presentation of information in small groups
• Students create own learning targets and rubrics
• Written reflections of one’s own strengths and challenges

• Sequential portfolio of finished work

Major Assignments

• Develop a sequential booklet of drawing, rough drafts and ideas that pertain to each unit of study.
• Understand and apply the design principles of symmetry, module, negative shape, color contrast and variety.
• Apply these design principles in a work of art using the letters of our names.
• Work collaboratively in small random groups to observe and analyze works of art that exemplify a specific assignment.
• Explore one idea (subject matter) of personal interest over a period of time in any medium trying to improve it each time.
• Find an artist whose subject matter is similar to your own; compare your art to theirs; and learn from their techniques.
• Matt, label, and display several works of own art using museum guidelines.
• Reflect in writing on your own learning so as to appreciate the successes you have achieved and to get help with your challenges.
• Construct the criteria and rubrics for your own work.,
• Objectively assess the work of your peers by describing the good qualities observed in their work
