Functional Words and Phrases for Everyday Living
o Reading/recognizing basic one-three word functional sight words
o Explaining or using each functional sight word read/recognized in a sentence
o Finding learned functional sight words in the community
Real-World Reading
o Learning to read instructions, read and use phone books, menus, labels, newspapers, catalogs, mail, postal forms, websites, emails
o Learning to read instructions, maps, driving-related items, schedules, charts/graphs
o Learning to read bills, statements, and invoices
Real-World Speaking
o Learning to use telephones, answering machines, leaving messages,
o Asking strangers questions: out at a restaurant, talking to professionals, talking in interviews
o Basic conversation strategies: asking question, giving answers, sharing opinions, elaborating beyond yes/no answers and one-word responses, getting and giving directions, and everyday social interactions
Real-World Writing
o Writing personal information: name, address, phone number, names of family members
o Writing personal messages: schedules, appointments, reminder lists
o Writing messages to others: email, greeting cards, notes, phone messages, mail
Book Reading
o Comprehension questions about a story read, retelling of stories
o Vocabulary/Spelling about a story read

Major Assignments/Requirements:

Students will need help from parents to complete some of the assignments

Students are required to complete a make up assignment in place of a lab if absent on a lab day, otherwise the student is expected to turn in the work missed one week following the date of absence. Anything not turned in withing a week from the absence will result in yiour child being asked to come in during lunch or after school to finish.

Students will be required to redo an assignment that he/she may have failed. For each area that originally was awarded a point and answered correctly after the redo, allows the student to receive half credit for that question. The grade WILL take into account your child's specific abilities and he/she will not be downgraded because of ability.
