Topic for the weeek of 1/25/10:  Homemaking/Job Olympic events 

 
 Monday
Let’s Talk About Life Skills: Students will participate in a conversation discussing and answering questions about the following topics.
Topics: Behavior, community, communication, cooking, grooming, mealtime, self-awareness, workplace, health, household, money, recreation, safety, social, survival, and time.
***more topics may be added as the need arises.

 

 Tuesday
Real-World Reading: Students will learn to read/recognize items that are used in daily life and their meanings.
Topics: Menus, recipes, labels, instructions, maps, schedules, driving related items, phone books/newspapers (on and offline), catalogs, mail and postal forms, websites and emails, bills/invoices/statements, applications and other forms.
            ***more topics may be added as the need arises
 
 Wednesday
Personal work time: Students will work on creating a portfolio. Some of the portfolio pieces will be touched on in other subject areas but the putting together of the portfolio will take place in English. The portfolio will include:
 
·         Functional Academics: Alphabetizing, capitalizing, punctuating, reading, spelling, printing, handwriting, dictionary, following directions, filling out forms, computer, numbers, operations, math vocabulary, shapes, measurement, weight, money, calculator, calendar, temperature, time, schedules, graphs, charts, library, and reference material. (English/Math)
·         Home: Job chores, money management, food and nutrition/vocabulary, grocery shopping, food labels, menu planning, recipes, food preparation, cooking, cleaning the table, sweeping the floor, dusting and vacuuming, appliances, home repair, family helper, childcare, pet care, first aid, clothing, fashion, laundry, making and changing a bed. (English/Math/Science)
·         Outdoors: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Astronomy, camping, fishing, gardening, walking, hiking, nature, pollution, and recycling. (Science)
·         Recreational and Health: Recreation, playing on a team, sports, games, cycling, horseback riding, skating, skiing, swimming, brushing teeth, flossing teeth, washing hands and face, showering or bathing, deodorant, skin/lotion, hair care, shaving, make-up, nail care, public toileting, and menstrual cycle (girls only). (Science/English)
·         Community, Country and World:  My community, communication, the telephone, telephone book/yellow pages (on and offline), asking to use a phone in the community, newspapers (on and offline), community directions, maps, community workers, conservation, energy, ecology, garbage and litter, community activities, meeting people, people in the community, my school, community businesses, banking, walking in the community, street crossing, street safety, safety signs, the law, transportation, travel, my country, and weather. (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies)
 
 Thursday
Let’s Read Some More About Life Skills: Students will continue to learn to read/recognize items that are used in daily life and their meanings.
Topics are similar to Tuesdays, some additional include: Homemaking, health concerns, consumer affairs, money matters, going places, and government.
            ***more topics may be added as the need arises
 
 Friday
Let’s Speak and Write About Life Skills: Students will learn to speak and write about life skill topics to the best of their ability.
·         Speak topics: using answering machines, using telephones, giving directions, job interview, conversational skills, speaking at a restaurant, talking to professionals, using positive speech, making phone calls to strangers, more than one word responses, saying thanks, and social interactions.
·         Writing topics: recording personal information, writing phone messages, using email and internet, writing names and addresses, making notes on a calendar, making lists, sending and personal notes.
 
 
***Please note your child will be working on the topics that best suit his/her needs and not all topics may be discussed with your child.

   *students will alternate clock, calendar, measuring and money on Monday and Fridays.  If they worked on clock and calendar on Monday they will work on money and measuring on Friday.

 Wednesday  Job Olympic life skill tasks:  Students will complete a variety of life skill tasks including sorting, mailing, filing, custodial, bussing tables, and fililng.  
 Thursday
 Stocking, food prep at Cousin's subs or recycling at the high school
 
 Friday  Food and dining prep at Victoria's
