Title of Program: Middle School Art Middle school students will understand and apply the elements and principles of art through a variety of media and techniques. Students will build upon prior knowledge with an emphasis placed on understanding and appreciating the influence of art from other times and cultures.

Students will:
• understand, select, and apply media, techniques and processes. (Media)
• understand and apply elements and organizational principles of art. (Elements & Principles)
• consider, select, and apply a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas. (Symbolism)
• understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures. (Art History)
• reflect upon, describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate their own and others’ work. (Assessing Art)
• make connections between visual arts, other disciplines, and daily life. (Purpose of Art)
Student Learning Outcomes:
The student will be able to...
• create art using at least three different media.
• identify and utilize the following elements and principles of art: line, shape (circle, square, rectangle, oval, triangle, pentagon, parallelogram), form (sphere, cube, pyramid, cone, and cylinder), color (primary, secondary, warm, cool and complimentary), texture, balance, repetition, and variety.
• identify symbolic meanings found in artwork.
• identify artwork from three different cultures and at least three different artists.
• reflect upon, describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate their own and other’s work.
• understand that people create art to express thoughts, feelings and ideas; to make money; to make their environment pleasing; to record history; to tell a story and make the connection that math, writing, reading, and critical stance are connected to the visual arts.

These goals are on a continuum basis Since students come from various schools, there is a need to review basic skills. A foundation is presented in grade 6 and reinforced and expanded upon in grades 7 and 8. Since there is more fine motor control in grade 8 students, projects are more complex and elaborate with additional tools and techniques.
District Writing Expectation:
Examples:
• Create cartoons to reinforce writing skills through main ideas and sequence.
• Create movie posters and critique substantiating opinions to reinforce critical stance.
• Critique paintings to reinforce implied verses of stated ideas.
• Critique a story written about students' original gargoyles.
• Write a biography about their original cartoon characters.
• Persuasive writing through use of current art topics.
• Students write a description of their artwork and explain if there is anything they would do differently and discuss the reasons.
Students will write in their journals.
Integration of Technology:
Website research, Webquest, Power Point, Computer Simulation
Evaluation:
Performance-based assessment projects which may include: Drawing- portraits, still life, Op Art, Pop art, symmetrical designs; Painting-Asian brush painting, Aboriginal dreamings, folk art, faux stained glass; Sculpture: masks, pottery, wire sculpture, Plastercraft, polymer clay.). Other evaluation tools that may be used are reflections, rubrics, class participation, one writing assignment per semester, and portfolios.
