2010 – 2011 FES Meetings,
PTO-Sponsored Special Events & Fundraisers

August/September

BOGO Book Fair: We will again hold our first book fair at the FES Open House and first two days of school. This book fair is a “Buy One, Get One Free” book fair. For every item purchased, a second item of equal or lesser value is also given for free. It is the PTO’s goal to get more books in the hands of our students and help them get excited about reading.

The August/September Open House Book Fair is the first of two book fairs held by the FES PTO each year. It is a great event for students and families to purchase new books as gifts or to take home. Parents can also purchase books or gift certificates to donate to a teacher or to the library.

Since this book fair is “Buy One, Get One Free,” there will be no revenue generated to earn books for the school or library. The value goes right back to all individual purchases.

September

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, September 14th 6:30 – 7:30 pm): We would like to extend a special invitation to our new families, but everyone is welcome! The first meeting is a great time to get an overview of what the PTO does and what we’re all about. Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

The Statesman fundraiser (dates to be announced): The Statesman is the official newspaper of the Town of Farmington. It frequently has articles about happenings at the school, as well as pictures of our students. It also has information about what’s going on in the Town of Farmington and the Kewaskum School District. It’s a great resource! The FES PTO receives $5 for every new subscription and $2.50 for every renewal. It doesn’t matter when your subscription ends. Sign up during our one-month fundraiser and an extra year will be added onto the backside of your subscription!

Green & Gold Experience/PTO fundraiser (sales September 15th – 28th, delivery October26th): This is our one big fundraiser we have each year. With the money raised in previous years we purchased a defibrillator, some of the new, safer rubber mulch for the playground, a new, faster die cut machine with a lot more shapes, and additional books for the reading room, which is a resource all teachers can access to helpthe students. It also provides additional funds for school assemblies and all the fun PTO events listed in this informational packet.

October

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, October 12th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

Grandparents’ Day (Thursday, October 14th): A very popular day for students and grandparents/guests alike. We have had huge turnouts in the past for this special event where grandparents, or special friends in the absence of grandparents, get to visit the classroom with the student they are visiting. The guests can also eat lunch with their student, and even go to recess, if they would like.

Teacher Appreciation Dinner (Tuesday, October 19th): A dinner served at school for the FES staff during parent/teacher conferences. The PTO provides the main course of the meal and FES families supply the side dishes & desserts. This is a small way for FES parents to say thank you to the FES staff for all they do throughout the year.

Fall Fest/Halloween Party (Friday, October 22nd): Because many students don’t have trick-or-treating close to their home, the PTO hosts a ghoulishly good time at school for students (and parents) to dress up in their costumes and spend a fun-filled evening together. We supply the fun and safe environment. Parents and students just need to show up and have a spooktacular time. Past parties included a cake decorating contest and pumpkin decorating. Start getting creative and making plans. It will be a fun time for the whole family.

November

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, November 9th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

December

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, December 14th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

Winter Craft Fair (Friday, December 17th): Students really enjoy this special event during an afternoon at school. It is their time to make a craft or two to take home and put on display or save and give as an extra special gift.

January

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, January 11th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

DARE Celebration (date to be announced): The PTO hosts a celebration for all 5th grade students when they complete the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The program is also partially funded by the PTO for supplies for each student.

February

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, February 8th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

March

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, March 8th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

Book Fair (March 1st during conferences and March 2nd & 3rd during the school day): This is our second book fair of the year, and is a great fundraiser for the school’s library and classrooms. The PTO receives a 50-70% return on the total purchases by taking our profits in the form of books instead of a cash payment (last year we received over $2100 worth of books for the library and classrooms!).

Sock Hop (date to be announced): FES hosts its own version of March Madness at school with fun dress up days for the students. In the past, there have been crazy hair and pajama days, etc. Most of the kids participate and get very creative. It is also time for the annual Sock Hop in the FES gymnasium. There is a DJ, snacks & more. For the Sock Hop, most students dress up in 50s era clothing. Many girls wear homemade poodle skirts and the guys wear white T-shirts with jeans rolled up at the ankle. It is a fun evening for the whole family!

April

6 Traits + 1 Writing Fun Assembly (Tuesday, April 12th at 9:15 a.m.): This fun, exciting program helps students learn important writing skills in an entertaining, interactive way. As always, parents are invited to attend this assembly.

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, April 12th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

School-Wide Easter Egg Hunt (likely Friday, April 15th, but to be announced): All FES students enjoy the Easter Egg hunt in each classroom at the end of the day before spring break. FES parents and PTO donations help fill the plastic eggs with little goodies like bouncy balls, erasers, bracelets, tattoos and more.

Jump Rope Contest (dates to be announced): Each elementary school in the district has its own jump rope contest to determine the school’s best jumpers at each level. The top jumpers from FES, KES and WES then travel as a group to each of the three schools and have a jump off in front of all school district students. Trophies are awarded to the top jumpers in the district at each level.

May

PTO Meeting (Tuesday, May 10th 6:30 - 7:30 pm): Meet and greet starts at 6:15 pm. As always, free childcare will be provided.

Spring Plant Sale (fundraiser): Bemis Greenhouses supplies all the beautiful plants and hanging baskets we purchase for this successful fundraiser which raised almost $5,000 last year! We have had many rave reviews over the years and it can be quite a sight to see when you pull into FES to pick up your plants as hundreds of beautiful flowers are spread out everywhere.

June

Spring Fling: One last hurrah during the final week of school for the FES family. It is an afternoon of games and fun activities for the students and teachers to relax, enjoy each other’s company and let the parent volunteers take over. This event is one of the students’ favorites and often involves water games, snacks and a whole lot of fun. All students should dress appropriately.

Other: There are other miscellaneous projects funded by the PTO throughout the year. These include, but are not limited to: school assemblies (which last year included an inflatable astronomy dome, a First Stage Theater presentation of Tomas and the Library Lady, and Stuart Stotts, a musician and motivational speaker); the annual teachers’ fund (teachers are given money to spend on extra items for classrooms); a KEYS (Kewaskum Youth Scholarships, Inc.) donation, the FES Earth Partnership program, our Free Family Fun Nights and many more. Also, this year the FES PTO would like to support the Kewaskum Community Food Pantry by accepting optional donations of non-perishable food items at our evening/family events.

Parents: All PTO evening events are for students and parents to enjoy together. At NO TIME, should a student be without adult supervision. This is for the safety and enjoyment of all. Again this year, if there are behavior problems with a student, the student and the adult responsible for that student will be asked to step away from the activity for a period of time. We started this policy at the Sock Hop last year, but never had to use it, which was great! Thank you for your help and understanding.
