- Work hard in all classes. Junior year will have recent grades with which admission officers will be evaluating you. College admissions decisions are made, in part, based on your grades from the first three years of high school.
- The most important thing you can do in selecting a university or technical college is to visit the campus that most interests you. Do this in your junior year and the summer before your senior year. Visit the UW Help Web site to determine when schools are offering an open house or preview day. The UW Help Web site address is http://uwhelp.wisconsin.edu. The Web address for the Wisconsin Technical College System is http://witechcolleges.org. Plan college visits with your parents and discuss them with your school counselor.
- Schedule a Grade 11 Individual Planning Conference with your school counselor. Initial information on scheduling your Individual Planning Conferences will be sent to your parents in September.
- Talk with college representatives who visit Kewaskum High School. Periodically check the Kewaskum High School "In-School College Visit Calendar" in the School Counseling Office and online at the Kewaskum School Counseling Web site.
- Talk to family members, teachers, co-workers, church leaders and friends about their education and career decisions. Share your plans with them.
- Use the career and college resources at Kewaskum High School.
- You can open a student account on the WISCareers Web site. Kewaskum students and their parents can use WISCareers at any time to research specific colleges, technical schools, careers, and majors of study. It also provides links to apprenticeship opportunities and employers in specific career fields. Students who have not used the site before will need to create a user account. When prompted, enter the registration code "khs-c076." If you have questions about setting up a user account, or general questions about WISCareers, contact your guidance counselor. The Web address is http://wiscareers.wisc.edu.

All University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Private Schools, and many out of state schools will be present. See your school counselor with questions.
- Attend a Wisconsin Education Fair (WEF). WEF's are FREE events held regionally throughout Wisconsin in the Fall of each year. Students can meet with approximately 100 professional admission representatives from all over the region, learn about requirements, academic programs, financial aid, scholarships, housing, and more. Kewaskum students and their parents are encouraged to attend the WEF at Marian University in Fond du lac, on Monday, September 27, 2010, from 9:00 am - 11:00 a.m.. - Develop a list of colleges that you want to attend. Consider factors such as location, cost, public/private, size, major, etc.
- Plan to visit as many of your "top choice" colleges as possible. Make appointments for interviews and campus tours. If possible, visit on weekdays and ask for permission to sit in on a few classes. For a list of UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System campus tours and preview days click here.
- Register for and take the Accuplacer test, if you are planning to attend a Wisconsin Technical College (e.g. Moraine Park, Fox Valley, etc.). Ask your school counselor for assistance if needed. Wisconsin Technical College bound students may also take the ACT to satisfy entrance requirements. ACT fee waivers are available for students who receive free or reduced lunch and are available from your school counselor.
- Schedule and take the ACT. Pick up ACT registration information and preparation guides in the School Counseling Office. Information on the ACT is available from your school counselor, the Kewaskum School Counseling Web site and http://actstudent.org. Students are generally recommended to schedule their ACT in April of their junior year. ACT fee waivers are available for students who receive free or reduced lunch and are available from your school counselor.
- Utilize FREE ACT and SAT preparation available online at www.knowhow2gowisconsin.org
- Begin to plan your schedule for your senior year. Make sure you take a demanding college prep course load. Four year and two year colleges will weigh admissions decisions based on the rigor of your senior year course schedule. If you failed a course in high school, talk with your school counselor to check credits.
- Start planning and exploring financial aid including scholarships. Your high school grades, activities and interests can all affect how many scholarships you are eligible for.
- Join a club or activity. Kewaskum High School offers many opportunities to explore your interests and become involved. It isn’t too late to join one or more clubs, sports, community organizations, or volunteer. These activities can go a long way in making you more competitive for scholarships, as well as college admissions.
- If you have any questions regarding the college and financial aid process, use you school counselor as a resource.
