We are wrapping up our unit in operations and algebraic thinking and are moving into a review of fractions. In addition to our typical workshop schedule with mini-lessons and small group learning, we are going to add Measurement Fridays! These days will center around learning and working with measurement. This Friday was spent investigating measurement and focusing on two aspects of measurement: every object as several measurable attributes, and we use units and formulas to measure these attributes. Check out some pictures of our party: ASk your child what they used to measure today! We also had an activity involving estimation and Twizzlers!
During our writing sessions, we learned about how to write a piece focused on analyzing literature. Students had to pick a text rich in features and author techniques that we could dissect and analyze. We spent quite a bit of time writing a thesis and supporting our thinking with quotes from the text. We will be adding the final pieces to our hardcover books in the next week.
We have finished another round of Fountas and Pinnell assessments-where teachers listen to a student read and then ask several questions to assess comprehension. Because of our results in addition to what we have noticed in small groups so far, most students have new book club groups. Ask your child what book they are reading. Please remember that students should be reading 100 minutes at home, each week.
We have spent the last month diving in to energy! Using one of our Project Lead the Way projects, we investigated types of energy, potential and kinetic energy, what happens to energy when things collide and how speed affects energy. While working through the engineering process, students designed and tested vehicle restraint systems to keep a raw egg from cracking or breaking during a crash. Students added a post to their blog on Friday with a picture of their vehicle heading down the ramp! Ask them to log in to Blogger with the Google username and password and check it out!
